Orange is going to offer the Apple iPhone in France, but the most interesting part of the partnership is the first time availability of the officially unlocked iPhone handset.
Laws in France prevent Apple from tying their iPhone exclusively to their own network. Consumers have to have the right to move to different carriers and take their iphones with them. So Orange is going to offer a locked iPhone for $399 and the unlocked iPhone for a substantially higher cost.
The partnership between Apple and Orange was leaked on 8-5-2007, while Apple’s Deals with T-Mobile in Germany and O-2 in the United Kingdom were announced to the public immediately, as expected, Orange’s agreement has taken much longer than anticipated.
Orange (Subsidiary of France Telecom) was adamant to the fact that they were haggling over the commercial details of the partnership and had nothing to do with trying to unlock the Apple iPhone.
Who knows how much Apple is gonna charge for the unlocked version of the iPhone or how easily available it will be. It’s easy to picture Apple obeying the law but at the same time charging an arm and a leg for the unlocked iPhone.
The cost of the unlocked iPhone, Orange insist, will be re least in the near future.
